Well some of that scenario has changed a bit in the past 30 years and now it is up to you, the diamond jewelry shopper, to play a more active part in this process and so you will need to do your homework before you make your purchase.

A carat is a measurement used to determine the weight of a diamond. One carat is equal to 0.2 grams. The price of a diamond will raise heavily if it is large. This is because large diamonds are a far rarer than small diamonds.

Ensure the quality description is specific. Many retailers only provide a range, i.e., G-I color, SI-I3 clarity. This range is too broad. A good merchant will specifically state the quality. G, VS-2 or H, SI-1.

Many online diamond retailers sell their diamond stud earrings for just a bit above wholesale thanks to the lower operating costs and their willingness to pass those savings on to you the consumer.

There are also some natural diamonds which have undergone treatments to reduce its blemishes thus enhanced its appearance. It is still a low grade diamond but dishonest dealers may try to pass it off as a good graded diamond and sell you at a higher price.

So while there may be a few advantages of buying a diamond online, it may not work for those who want to actually feel and view a diamond up close to help them decide on a purchase, and at the end of the day it would depend on what the buyer is comfortable with and what lengths or effort a buyer is willing to spend in order to purchase a diamond.
